In short
- Final expense insurance is a small, lifelong life insurance policy meant for the funeral, transportation and the bills you leave behind.
- In many cases approval is based only on health questions, with no medical exam.
- The premium is fixed and coverage doesn't go down with age, as long as premiums are paid.
What final expense insurance pays for
The money goes to the person you choose, who can use it however it's needed. The most common uses:
Funeral or cremation
In the U.S., a funeral often costs thousands of dollars, and the funeral home wants to be paid right away.
Transportation home
Bringing the body or ashes back to be buried near family, in another state or another country.
Bills left behind
Hospital bills, credit cards, the month's rent and other debts your family would have to settle.
Why people choose it
Simple approval
Often no blood test is needed: the insurance company decides based on your health answers.
It doesn't expire
It's lifelong: as long as premiums are paid, coverage continues, even at an advanced age.
Fits your budget
Because the coverage amount is smaller, the premium is usually lower than a large life insurance policy.

Frequently asked questions
How is it different from regular life insurance?
Final expense insurance has a smaller coverage amount, meant for the funeral and final bills. That's why it's usually easier to qualify for and cheaper each month.
Do I need a medical exam?
Often not. The insurance company decides based on your answers to health questions. Some conditions can change the price or the type of policy; your agent will check your case.
Can the money pay to send my body home to another country?
Yes. The money goes to the beneficiary you choose, who can use it for transportation, the funeral or whatever the family needs.
Do I need a green card?
Not necessarily. Many people living in the U.S. apply with a valid passport and an ITIN (the Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, for those without a Social Security number). The insurance company makes the final decision.
Up to what age can I apply?
It depends on the insurance company; many accept older applicants, including retirees. Fill out the form and your agent will tell you what applies at your age.
Which insurance company backs my policy?
We currently represent National Life Group, Foresters Financial, American National, Mutual of Omaha and Pan-American Life, all insurance companies with over 100 years in business. The company's name is on your quote before you sign, and your agent explains why it's the best fit for your case.
Does filling out the form mean I have to buy?
No. The form only lets an agent contact you and show you your options. You decide afterwards.
